Automated Extraction of Shallow Erosion Areas Based on Multi-Temporal Ortho-Imagery

چکیده
In several areas of the Alps, steep grassland is characterized by shallow erosions. These erosions represent a hazard through the increased availability of unconsolidated material in steep locations, loss of soil and impaired landscape aesthetics. Generally, the erosions concern only small areas but sometimes occur in large numbers. Remote sensing technologies have emerged as suitable tools to study the spatio-temporal changes of these eroded areas. The detection of such eroded areas is often done by manual digitalization of aerial photographs, which is labour-intensive and includes a certain risk of subjectivity. In this study we present a methodological tool that allows the automatic classification of shallow erosions on the basis of orthophoto series. The approach was carried out within a test site in the inner Schmirn Valley, Austria. The study covers both the detection of erosion areas and a multi-temporal analysis of the geomorphological changes. The presented approach is an appropriate tool for detecting shallow erosions and for analysing them in multi-temporal terms. The multi-temporal analysis revealed one period of higher increases in eroded areas compared to shrinking during the other periods. However, the analysis of the change of all single erosions indicates that in each study period there was both increase and decrease of erosion areas. The differences in the rates of increase between the observation years are most likely due to the irregular occurrence of events that encourage erosion. In contrast, the rates of decrease are almost constant and suggest a continuous rate of recovery. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2013, 5 2293

Multi-Temporal Assessment of Mangrove Forests Change in the Coastal Areas of Bushehr Region Based on Landsat Satellite Imagery
Continual access to precise information about the land use/land cover (LULC) changes of the Earth’s surface is extremely important for any sustainable development program in which LULC serves as one of the major input criteria. In this study, a supervised classification was applied to three Landsat images collected in 1986, 1998and 2018, providing mangrove forests change data in the coastal are...
متن کاملAutomated Extraction of Inundated Areas from Multi-Temporal Dual-Polarization RADARSAT-2 Images of the 2011 Central Thailand Flood
This study examines a novel extraction method for SAR imagery data of widespread flooding, particularly in the Chao Phraya river basin of central Thailand, where flooding occurs almost every year. Because the 2011 flood was among the largest events and of a long duration, a large number of satellites observed it, and imagery data are available. At that time, RADARSAT-2 data were mainly used to ...
متن کاملA RS/GIS study of rapid erosion in SE Spain using ERS SAR multi-temporal interferometric coherence imagery
Soil erosion is a widespread problem in semi-arid Mediterranean countries where irregular, intense rainfall can result in rapid erosion in areas of steep slope, soft lithology and sparse vegetation. This paper presents an integrated remote sensing/GIS approach to identify areas vulnerable to rapid erosion in Almería Province, Southeast Spain. ERS SAR multitemporal interferometric coherence imag...
متن کاملDetection of Rapid Erosion in SE Spain: A GIS Approach Based on ERS SAR Coherence Imagery
This paper presents an integrated remote sensing—GIS approach for identifying areas vulnerable to rapid erosion in Almería Province, Southeast Spain. Earth Resources Satellite (ERS) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) multi-temporal interferometric coherence imagery has been used to detect rapid erosion that causes random changes in the micro-topography of a land surface. These small scale changes r...
متن کاملTemporal Variation of Interrill Erosion Affected by Slope Gradient in Soils with Different Texture
The process of splash of soil particles by raindrops and their transport by splash or surface shallow flow is considered as interrill erosion, which can reduce soil fertility and cause pollution of surface water. This research was carried out to investigate the temporal variation of interrill erosion in different soils affected by surface slope. For this purpose, laboratory experiments were car...
